The DG Echo has officially launched the EU Aid Volunteers initiative in January 2015 for an initial period of six years. It will offer European citizens (extremely varied profiles) opportunities to engage into projects of humanitarian aid : 4 000 possibilities in the field and 10 000 on-line.
It complements the organization of humanitarian aid from the European Union and has a budget of 147.9 million euros. It participates in the commitment of the European Union for the challenges in disaster risk reduction.
Objectives of the Eu Aid Volunteers initiative
- Provide to Europeans an opportunity to demonstrate their solidarity with the people who need it most,
- Provide a professional support to people in need through the participation of well-prepared volunteers,
- Propose measures to strengthen the capacity of local organizations.
The sending and host organizations wishing to participate in the initiative, must be certified by the European Union, in meeting standards and quality standards. To ensure the effectiveness and quality of the initiative, local needs will be assessed regularly to guide projects.
The first volunteers deployments will take place during 2016.
